We're all pretty much upset that Samsung did not include the LED on the S4 Mini just like the one on the big S4 due to the fact that it's intended for a different market/price range.

Just recently a member from xda-developers called junkyde has developed this custom kernel called Vikinger - which is based off arco68's CM10.2 kernel and it's most notable feature is that it support BLN.

What is BLN you ask? BLN means Backlight Notifications and this neat feature will allow us to use the phone's capacitive keys' backlight as notification.

This is perfect for the people who don't use ringtones or vibrations for their notifications and have the phone sitting on a table all of the time. You can simply check and see if the keys' backlight is on and if it is, that means you have received a notification.

This kernel is offered for both 3G and LTE variants, there is no variant available for Duos users for now, unfortunately as it doesn't even have a official CyanogenMod build.

Huge thanks to junkyde from xda-developers forums. Some of the devs that are currently building other AOSP based roms for the S4 Mini are also planning on including this on their next builds.
